Introduction
In our previous discussion, we delved into the concept of “being still” in the context of our relationship with God and the role of the Holy Spirit. We explored the idea of not allowing distractions to divert our attention from the provision God has made available to us through the Holy Spirit. We learned that the Holy Spirit is the driving force behind creation, as highlighted in Job 26:13a, “By his Spirit he hath garnished the heavens…” This same Holy Spirit has been gifted to those who surrender to Jesus to empower and transform believers according to God’s Word.
Relying on the Holy Spirit
The believer is encouraged to live according to God’s standards and seek strength and wisdom from the Holy Spirit, rather than conforming to the world’s ways. The Holy Spirit is the source of strength for living out the life God has granted through salvation. It’s essential for believers to look to the Holy Spirit for guidance and empowerment, as He was given to us by Jesus through the will of the Father.
Practical ways to Be Still
In this part of our study, we will explore practical ways to cultivate stillness in our lives, focusing on being conscious of the Holy Spirit’s presence. Ephesians 5:18 KJV instructs us, “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” Last week, we emphasized that being “filled with the Spirit” means being conscious of the Holy Spirit’s presence within you.
1. Worship and Praise
Ephesians 5:19 encourages us to “speak to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” Your worship and praise can be a powerful tool to encounter God, especially when done with sincerity. When you intentionally glorify Jesus in your worship, you invite the Holy Spirit’s tangible presence into your life.
2. Studying God’s Word
2 Peter 1:21 KJV reminds us that “the prophecy (God’s Word) came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” The Holy Spirit inspired God’s Word, making Him eager to reveal God’s intentions to you through Scripture. The more you study God’s Word, the more you build the consciousness of the Holy Spirit’s presence in your life.
3. Intercession
Acts 12:5 KJV narrates the story of Peter’s imprisonment and how “prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.” Intercession is a potent way to witness the Holy Spirit at work in the lives of people, which strengthens your confidence in His abilities. As seen in Acts 12:7-9, the Holy Spirit can intervene in miraculous ways in response to intercession.
Conclusion:
As we continue to explore the significance of “being still” and embracing the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives, let’s remember that building a conscious relationship with the Holy Spirit goes beyond mere knowledge; it’s about actively engaging with His presence through worship, studying God’s Word, and intercession. This intentional approach allows us to experience the Holy Spirit tangibly, drawing us closer to God’s perfect plan for our lives.
