Hungry Thirsty Heart: A Heart that Thirsts After God
Perennial hunger, insatiable appetite, and unquestionable thirst for the Godhead. Hunger and thirst are signs of healthiness and proper body functionality. The realities of God are birthed by hunger. In Psalm 107:5, we read about those who were hungry and thirsty, and how they cried out to the LORD in their trouble. God delivered them and satisfied their longing souls. C.S. Lewis rightly said, “Our best having is ‘want’.” Only the Lord can fill man’s unknown wants.
The Longing of the Soul
In this section, we explore the deep longing of the soul for God. Using Psalm 63:1-6 as a reference, we see David’s earnest seeking of God in the wilderness of Judah. In a dry and weary land, his soul thirsts for God. We learn that God’s kindness is better than life itself, and as David remembers and meditates on God, his soul is satisfied.
The Divine Order of Man
Here, we delve into the divine order of man as consisting of three parts: spirit, soul, and flesh. Originally, the spirit was meant to be the boss, the soul the manger, and the body the worker. However, sin disrupted this order, leading to the rebellion of the body against the spirit. We explore the consequences of this disruption and the need for restoration.
Jesus, the Bread of Life
Focusing on John 6:35, we discover that Jesus proclaimed Himself as the Bread of Life, the one who satisfies hunger and quenches thirst. We emphasize the need to come to Jesus daily, feeding on Him, and thirsting for Him. The satisfaction and purpose we seek can only be found in hungering and feeding on Jesus.
Setting the Heart and Soul to Seek God
Referencing 1 Chronicles 22:18-19, we highlight the importance of setting our hearts and souls to seek the Lord. Just as the people were instructed to build a sanctuary for their lover, we are called to fill and coordinate our hearts to seek Him fervently. We explore the longing for God expressed by John Piper and the need to turn away from worldly distractions to pursue the greatness of God.
The Holy Ghost and Intimacy with God
This section emphasizes the role of the Holy Ghost in hungering and thirsting for God. Through references like Joel 2:28 and John 7:37-39, we understand that the Holy Ghost is the power, presence, and person of God Himself. We encourage readers to cherish the gift of the Holy Ghost, as He enables us to have a deeper intimacy with God.
Hunger for God as a Lifestyle
We address the misconception that hunger for God is limited to fasting, reading Christian materials, or attending religious functions. True hunger for God is an ever-burning desire and longing for Him, even if one were the only human on Earth. It involves fervent prayer, studying the Word, and seeking greater intimacy with the Lord. We emphasize that the Holy Ghost is essential for a fulfilling hunger for God.
Conclusion
In the conclusion, we reiterate the importance of the hunger and thirst for God, highlighting the satisfaction and fulfillment found in Him alone. We share the testimonies of King David and Kathryn Kuhlman, who understood the value of the Holy Spirit and their insatiable hunger for God. We encourage readers to pursue a hungry and thirsty heart, as it leads to a deeper relationship with God and the manifestation of His glory.
As believers with hungry, thirsty hearts, we become vessels of God’s love and grace, conquering nations, and spreading His love. We are soul winners, love spreaders, and God’s sent ones.
